“What are your values?” I’ve had coaches ask me this before. They guided me to select words that were significant to me and my desired way of living.
Purpose. Travel. Alive. These are some of the words I remember creating a beautiful vision board with. And that’s where they sat––above my desk reminding me of the life I wasn’t living yet. I was still searching for my “purpose.” I was desiring to “travel” more. I simply wanted to feel “alive.”
When I went through the BodyMind Coaching Program, the word “values” once again came up. I didn’t think I’d get much from it, except perhaps another self-created poster and a void inside.
However, something shifted this time. These core values became deeper than words and aspirations, they became my inner compass of navigation, gently pointing me in the right direction, and lovingly guiding me back when I drifted. These words were no longer words I was reaching for, they were the words my body was holding and experiences it was desiring to create.
Expression. Connection. Fun… I now understood who I was more deeply, the things my soul desired to live while being here in this physical body.
I longed to express, and I reflected upon how this showed up since childhood through writing. Connecting with myself, nature, God, and others, is something inherent to my wellbeing. And fun––oh how I desired to laugh, play, and enjoy the journey rather than taking it all so seriously!
Now, rather than living with a void because my words were out of reach, I knew the feeling and the essence of what was calling me forward.
Looking back I could see why my body was shouting so loudly in certain situations, where I was living completely unaligned with these values… swallowing my voice, going through the motions, and trying so hard to “figure it out.”
When I relaxed into myself, with my values as my guide, I could become aware and notice where they were showing up. That job I took just to meet other people’s expectations, that job that left me so empty inside, that job where I began experiencing health issues––didn’t align with my core values. The job I happily took later, even though it paid barely over minimum wage, aligned with each and every value of mine. That right there showed me the significance of living true to myself, living aligned with my personal core values.
It’s not about what the world says you should be or do, it’s about your soul divinely guiding you.
Every moment, even those moments that aren’t my preferred choice, I have the opportunity to ask myself, “Where can I express? How can I connect deeper here? What can I do to create more joy and fun?”
Knowing my values, and going deeper, beyond the words, empowers me to live life with more presence while stepping into my potential. I become a co-creator of my reality, aware of how to steer through the perceived challenges and into unlimited possibilities.
How about you? What are your values? What does your soul desire for you?
How can you bring more of your values into your day today?
Those answers you seek, the happiness you desire, all reside within. Let your values be your guide.
